John 17:21 --

"That they may all be one even as thou, Father, art in me and I in Thee, that they also may be in us: that the world may believe that Thou didst send me."

"Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."

               -Leo Buscaglia

Welcome

The YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) celebrated its 150-year anniversary in 2001. Our Mattoon YMCA opened its doors in February 1988 after being chartered in 1982. The YMCA has a rich heritage, a Christian mission, and a tradition of values. The links at left will take you on a tour of our organization.

History

The first YMCA was founded in London, England in 1844. Thirty-five years later, the first YMCA was founded in Mattoon as a railroad YMCA. Over the years, the Mattoon YMCA operated from numerous homes but closed during the Great Depression in 1932.

When the Mattoon YMCA became a United Way agency in 1984 and opened the doors of its present building in 1988, a new era began. A variety of programs were initiated, and existing programs expanded. Interested in learning more? Come join us!
